On Sunday August 8th, 2010, the annual U.S. Open Sandcastle Competition is held. Professional and amateur sand carving teams throughout the U.S. will compete to win cash prizes.

Important Times

Team Check-In
6:30AM - 7:30AM

Sandcastle Building
9:00AM - 2:00PM

Due to high tide, castles will only available for viewing until 4:00PM on the day of the event.

Masters Category

The Masters category is divided into 3-person and 10-person teams. The top prize of $5,000 is awarded to the 1st Place 10-person Master's Champion, $3,000 goes to the 2nd place team and $2,000 for the 3rd place. The top placed 3-person team will receive $2,500 with second place team receiving $1,500.

Amateur Categories

As this is an "Open" competition, amateur teams are divided into five categories: Castles of Your Mind, Best Sculpture, Best Replica, Creatures of the Sea and Executive Sand Box, which is a business sponsored team. Cash prizes of $1,000 for 1st place, $500 for 2nd place, $200 for 3rd place and $100 for 4th place is awarded for each category.

Team Guidelines

All teams are asked to follow these specific guidelines.

  • Each sculpture has a designated building area of 30 feet by 30 feet and only biodegradable decorative materials such as shells or seaweed may be used.
  • Food coloring and flour are permitted, but adhesives of any kind are not allowed.
  • Each team is expected to build their sculpture with hand tools only such as masonry, garden or household implements, shovels and tampers, and are allowed only one wheelbarrow and one ladder.
  • Water containers for builders can be filled ahead of time and stored outside the building plot.
  • Watering of your plot can begin one hour prior to competition start time. There is no limit to the number of water carriers, but they must stay outside the plot.
